Creativity begins with a lightweight roll of sketching paper.
Sketching paper is a specialized type of paper specifically suited to sketches - i.e. preliminary drawings, quick studies or the practising and perfecting of drawing techniques. and it is also lighter in weight.
Sketching paper typically comes in different-sized sheets, pads and rolls and is lighter in weight - 50lbs/74gsm - 60lbs/89gsm - compared to drawing paper.
The different surfaces and weights of sketch paper rolls or sheets will determine the types of sketches as well as the best media to use:
- Smooth surface sketch paper is best for line drawings, technical drawings and finished artworks.
- Medium surface sketch paper is for all dry media - pencils, charcoal, pastels and Conté crayons. (But pen, ink and light washes can also be used).
3 reasons to use a sketching pad:
1. For practising: Sketching paper is for having fun, experimenting and trying out new skills without any pressure.
2. For creative expression: Ideas beget ideas; the more you practice and let your ideas run wild in a sketchbook, the more ideas will flow and the more you will be inspired. (it’s like visual art brainstorming).
3. For sharpening your drawing skills: As you practise and experiment, you grow in confidence as an artist.
